John's car is approx. 2/10ths quicker that's why Dave's car looks like he's ahead because upon starting, watching the tree, Dave's car leaves 2/10ths sooner than John. This is so they go through the traps at the end of the track at the same time. This is why, when racing, if you are the faster car before you even leave starting position you have a 50% better chance of winning because whoever leaves first is faced with the chance of red lighting and that's what David did and that's why John won.
